Meet Hugo Bot: Your Grading and Feedback Companion

Hugo Bot assisting an instructor with rubric design and grading feedback in TimelyGrader

Who’s Hugo again?

Hugo is our office dog!

Oh - you mean Hugo Bot:

Treat Hugo like your personal instructional design companion, helping you navigate the platform, personalizing feedback, and collaborating with you to redesign your assessment.

In the early days of planning and working with our institutional partners, we’ve decided to not make Hugo agentic, meaning that he will help but he won’t do it for you.

You can call Hugo to your side (of your screen) by simply clicking on this button:

Button to ‘summon’ Hugo.

How can Hugo be helpful?

As an instructional design partner. How should I change my rubric to reflect new learning objectives? Create a new rubric that is accurate?

Hugo will be able to view any rubrics on your Rubric Templates page and also view whatever rubric you are looking at. He can help you spot errors, quantify things, etc.

Hugo is thinking about how to make the rubric more clear.

As a grading assistant. Hugo will also be able to view whatever you are viewing while you are grading.

If you want to clarify the suggestion rationale, or pinpoint a sentence where the student was unclear, or have an intellectual argument about how a criterion is interpreted, Hugo can do that.

Hugo is clarifying why a student got a 3 as a suggestion instead of a 4.

As a feedback assistant. Hugo can do all the things to the feedback that he can do to the grading side of things. This means feedback can be personalized further, shortened, translated into Spanish like below. For our Mexican institutions, Hugo will also support natively support Spanish if the Course or UI is set to Spanish.

Hugo can also help you translate feedback for particular students. Useful if you are teaching a class in English but your students are not native English speakers.

And of course, a support bot. While it’s not the most flashy capability, helping our users navigate how things work and what buttons to press is still very important. Hugo has direct access to a support knowledge base meaning it can guide you to do something. Like a guide dog?

Hugo will understand all the intricacies of the platform, the LMS integration, and any technical limitations.

Anyway, those are the four major buckets that we envision instructors and TAs will use Hugo Bot to improve their assessment, collaborate with it to redesign their assessment, and ultimately help TimelyGrader become more scalable within large institutions. How most of you will actually use it? How you'll actually use Hugo? We're just as curious as you are.

When is it coming?

Hugo Bot will be available to all institutional partners with an LMS integration on August 6th at 4PM PST! Self serve users will also receive the update shortly after. Stay tuned for news on that!
